Pricing Transparency Statement

Deals you find on Groupon may display various prices, including strikethrough prices, and may advertise certain discount percentages and savings amounts.  Groupon is committed to providing its customers with transparent information about all displayed prices and savings.  Below you can learn more about what each of the price representations you see on Groupon means.

Local or Hotel & Travel Deals

Most Local, Hotel and Travel deals will display two price amounts and a discount percentage for each listed deal option, like this[1]:

 $39 (gray strikethrough) $27 (green) 30% OFF

In the above example, the gray strikethrough price indicates what the merchant providing the deal represents to be the offer’s total current value if purchased from the merchant outside of Groupon.  It may not be the prevailing market price.  The merchants are responsible for providing Groupon and customers with accurate information about the offer value and for updating this information if the value changes.  Prices for some services, such as event tickets, hotel stays, and other travel services, may fluctuate.  Prices for these categories represent the standard sale price for these services provided by the merchant at the time of publishing the offer on Groupon.  If you believe a particular deal has inaccurate information about an offer value, please notify us by email at pricing@groupon.com

In the above example, the green price represents the price you will pay for the deal if you purchase it through Groupon. The savings percentage (“30% OFF”) represents the percentage discount of the Groupon price off of the merchant represented offer value.  It may not be the lowest available price.  In certain cases, additional taxes and fees may apply and be charged either at checkout or at the time the voucher is redeemed or service is rendered.  These amounts are not reflected in the green price or the savings percentage.

When browsing deals by category or using Groupon’s search function, you may see the word “From” in front of the listed green price.  This means that there are multiple deal options and/or price points, which you will find by clicking to view the deal page.  In these cases, the green price listed is the lowest of the available deal options and/or price points.

Occasionally, Groupon will offer special flash sales where, for a limited time, Groupon will further discount deals.  During a special flash sale, deals will display three prices, like this:

$39.99 (gray strikethrough) $21.99 (green strikethrough) $19.99 (pink) 50% OFF Extra $2 Off Ends 3/29

In the above example, the gray strikethrough price indicates the same thing as in a standard deal (described in more detail above), i.e., what the merchant providing the deal represents to be the offer’s total current value if purchased from the merchant outside of Groupon.

In the above example, the green strikethrough price indicates the median price at which the deal was offered for sale on Groupon over the previous thirty (30) days, excluding prices during limited-time sales.  Note that this does not mean that the green strikethrough price was necessarily the price for the entire previous thirty (30) days, as there may have been price fluctuations over that time.

In the above example, the red price represents the special, limited-time price, the expiration of which is also indicated in red.  The savings percentage (“50% OFF”) indicates the percentage discount of the red limited-time sale price off of the gray merchant-represented offer value.  The limited-time additional discount representation (“Extra $2 Off” or "Extra 10% Off") indicates the difference between the red limited-time sale price and the green median price that the deal was offered for sale on Groupon over the previous thirty (30) days. The red price is not necessarily the lowest price at which the product has been or will ever be offered, and it is not a clearance price.  As with all deals, certain additional taxes and fees may apply that are not reflected in the red limited-time sale price or savings percentage.

Goods Deals

Just like Local, Hotel and Travel Deals, described above, Goods deals also typically display two price amounts and a discount percentage like this:

 $24.99 (gray strikethrough) $15.99 (green) 36% OFF

In the above example, the gray strikethrough price indicates what the vendor selling the product represents to be either (A) the listed Manufacturer Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of the product or (B) the price at which another retailer is currently offering the same product or a directly comparable product.  For any refurbished item (all of which will be disclosed as refurbished on the deal), the gray strikethrough price is the price of a new, non-refurbished product.  Note that the gray strikethrough price is not necessarily the prevailing market price or regular retail price for which the product could be purchased at other retailers.  The vendors selling the products are responsible for providing accurate comparable price information to Groupon and its customers and for updating this information if the value changes.  If you believe a particular deal has inaccurate information about a Goods product’s comparable prices, please notify us by email at pricing@groupon.com.

In the above example, the green price represents the price you will pay for the product if you purchase it through Groupon. The savings percentage (“36% OFF”) represents the percentage discount of the green price off of the vendor represented gray strikethrough price. It may not be the lowest available price.  In certain cases, additional taxes and fees, such as shipping and handling, may apply and be charged at checkout.  These amounts are not reflected in the green price or the savings percentage.

When browsing Goods deals by category or using Groupon’s search function, you may see the word “From” in front of the listed green price.  This means that there are multiple deal options and price points, which you will find by clicking to view the deal page.  In these cases, the green price listed is the lowest of the available deal options and/or price points.

Occasionally, you will see special flash sales where, for a limited time, a vendor will further discount the products it sells through Groupon.  These special flash sales will display three prices, like this:

$19.99 (gray strikethrough) $8.99 (green strikethrough) $7.99 (pink) 60% OFF Extra $1 Off Ends 3/29

In the above example, the gray strikethrough price indicates the same thing as in a standard goods deal (described in more detail above), i.e., what the vendor represents to be the MSRP or the price of the same product or a directly comparable product offered for sale by a different retailer.

In the above example, the green strikethrough price indicates the median price at which the deal was listed for sale on Groupon over the previous thirty (30) days, excluding prices during limited-time sales.  Note that this does not mean that the green strikethrough price was the price for the entire previous thirty (30) days and there may have been price fluctuations over that time.

In the above example, the red price represents the special, limited-time price available for a certain period of time, the expiration of which is also indicated in red.  The savings percentage (“60% OFF”) indicates the percentage discount of the red limited-time sale price off of the vendor-represented gray price.  The limited-time additional discount representation (“Extra $1 Off” or "Extra 10% Off") indicates the difference between the red limited-time sale price and the green median price that the deal was offered for sale on Groupon over the previous thirty (30) days.  The red price is not necessarily the lowest price at which the product has been or will ever be offered and it is not a clearance price.  As with all deals, certain additional taxes and fees may apply that are not reflected in the red limited-time sale price or savings percentage.

If you ever encounter a situation where a merchant is selling a Local, Hotel or Travel deal outside of Groupon for the same products/services as included in a Groupon deal for a different price than the gray strikethrough price on the deal page, please contact us at pricing@groupon.com.  Likewise, for a Goods deal, if you believe that the listed strikethrough price does not correspond to the MSRP or the price of the product or a comparable product offered by a different retailer, please contact us at pricing@groupon.com. If you are a customer, and have questions about your order or are requesting refund, please contact Customer Support. If you are a merchant working with Groupon, and have concerns or questions about your deal, please contact Merchant Support.
